Statement on Israel-Iran Conflict

The June 21 airstrikes on Iran were unconstitutional, unjustified, and dangerous. The Saratoga County Democratic Committee demands accountability and an end to unauthorized war-making. Only Congress has the authority to declare war. The War Powers Resolution of 1973 is a constitutional guardrail against such reckless, unilateral military action to prevent such unauthorized, offensive use of U.S. military force without a vote in Congress. Donald Trump bypassed Congress, ignored the Constitution, and acted as if he alone could take the country to war.

Saratoga County Democratic Committee opposes any (further) engagement in the Israel-Iran war and is calling on our elected officials to resist this catastrophic and costly, “not our” war.

Saratoga County Democratic Committee (SCDC) urges Congress to initiate an investigation and treat Trump’s blatant violation of the U.S. Constitution and War Powers Resolution of 1973 as an impeachable offense. Congress must not yield on this issue of enormous consequence.

SCDC stands with countless U.S. Senators and Congressional representatives united in opposition to further warfare with Iran.  We are aligned with our Congressional representative, Paul D. Tonko’s (D-NY20,) position that such an attack violated the U.S. Constitution, International law, and the United Nations Charter.

The Saratoga County Democratic Committee supports the No War Against Iran Act to “prohibit the use of Federal funds for any use of military force in or against Iran absent specific Congressional authorization. The Bill contains an exception for self-defense as enshrined in the War Powers Act and applicable U.S. Law.” (Senator Sanders, I-VT) the Committee also supports the bipartisan Khanna-Massie War Powers Resolution to prevent war with Iran. This resolution is also being introduced in the U.S. Senate by Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA).

We call upon both of New York’s United States Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand to support the No War Against Iran Act and to support the Senate version of Khanna-Massie as introduced by Sen. Kaine. We urge the Senators to act with haste on this most vital matter.

The Committee asserts this conflict is unjust and the United States should not further assume a role that would cause additional and excessive human, military, and financial costs.

We remember the last time a Republican administration lied to Americans and the world and resist being misled again to allegations of a country having “weapons of mass destruction.” The U.S. intelligence community recently reported that there was “no evidence that Iran is building a nuclear weapon and is 3 years away from a nuclear weapon.” Donald Trump ignored this intelligence, lied when stating he would take two weeks to determine what action the administration would take, sidestepped Congress and sent bomb strikes into Iran.

Saratoga County Democratic Committee recognizes the volatility of the moment and asks our bi-partisan leaders to take immediate action in opposition to the Israel-Iran war and hold Donald Trump accountable.
